Adam's singing was ridiculously good on Motown night. Nice to see he toned out the theatrical over-doing it for once. He kicked everyone to the side with that performance.

VFTW kept Megan alive for another week, as I predicted. Damn, they're strong.

Lil et al sounded *much* better lip-syncing to a fixed-up studio track than live, esp. on the song Shira & I thought she should sing (You Keep Me Hangin' On). So if it's really recording artists they're after, then evaluating live performances might not be the best approach --although it's far more fun!

I still don't understand the level of love for Adam, but since VFTW has him in their sites once they lose Megan, he probably won't be leaving soon, no matter what I think.

Sorry Derick--it looks like all signs are pointing to an Adam/Lil Rounds face off in the finals. Just the way they were both featured in the group sing last night made that seem inevitable to me.

I have not been an ardent Adam fan, but he blew me away this week.

On the other hand, I do think that the fact that Megan is still there and Alexis is long gone proves that America votes for appearance and likeability over raw talent.

Is it too late to change my top 12 list?

Are any of the rest of you impressed with our Idol Master's grasp of math? I guess I have to trust you, IM, and finally believe that I will never in a million years ever win this thing. I mean, who thought Scott could hang on this long?!

The math...

Everyone's true interim standing is best reflected by his "maximum points" and not the far less informative points accrued to date -though these will finally coincide in the end. Here's how to calculate how many max pts you lose each week.

If i > j (i.e. contestant j leaves sooner than you predicted), the j-th contestant's departure costs you (i * (i - 1) - j * (j - 1))/2, where i is the week you predicted the j-th booted contestant would depart --and j is 1 for Jasmine, 2 for Jorge, 3 for Alexis, 4 for Michael, etc.

So if (like me) you ranked Alexis 4th, thus predicting she would be the i=10th contestant to depart, her premature departure cost you (10*9 - 3*2)/2 = 42 max pts.

The scores can range from 91 (if your top 6 contestants get booted in the 1st 6 weeks, in any order) to 364 (perfect prediction), while anything less than 182 is worse than expected by chance.

For me, I'm not sure that I care about the statistical mechanisms - I think that the pool has existed for 5 years and has been just fine. With all due respect, I think the average person in the pool (me) is just fine with how it works.

WADR, I was really just trying to explain exactly how it *does* work (providing a compact formula), not suggesting a change, per se; but whatever...

Thankfully, IPM nicely calculates everything (incl max pts) for everyone every week, so I agree you don't need to understand how it's done-unless you find it helpful to better understand the overall scoring system, which is why I derived it for myself.
