American Idol Viewer's Guide - Rat Pack!

In a moment of utter confusion, Danny sings "Don't You (Forget About Me)", Adam sings "St. Elmo's Fire (Man in Motion)", and Matt sings "If You Leave" while Allison sings "Chicago" and Kris sings "Birth of the Blues".

The night would be complete if the 5 finalists did this and Seacrest stood in as Carson.

You know those cigars you’ve been saving for a special occasion? Well light ‘em up, baby. It’s Rat Pack Standards week on AI and we’re down to the top 5! Just what the kids want, right? Songs by a bunch of dead guys... and we’re not talking Tupac and Biggie here. But all that aside, I think this week has the potential to seriously kick ass. With Lil and Noop Dog gone, American Idol voters have paved the way for a night of solid performances. The competition is stiff at this point, so let’s take a moment to talk about what these folks need to do to take it all the way.

Allison: Assuming that the majority of AI voters are either (a) female tweens, (b) a cappella singers and/or theater majors, and (c) geriatrics, Allison doesn’t stand a chance. Sure, she can sing the song book as they say, but she’s got that crazy red hair and those outfits. It doesn’t bode well.

Matt: Has anyone else noticed that mole on his forehead? That’s got to go if he’s going to even make it to next week. But hey, it worked out for Enrique Iglesias, so you never know.

Adam: Adam needs to continue being Adam because the judges love him. If he went over the top and sang something like “My Way,” I’d be all over it… as would America.

Danny: Danny needs to pray that Adam screws up.

Kris: Kris needs a divorce (to appeal to that female tween crowd). Oh, and have you noticed how he sings out of the side of his mouth like Mr. Ed? That’s got to stop too.

Want to know what’s going to take this week into the stratosphere of kick assness? Taylor Hicks. That’s right, the Soul Patrol himself will be performing his single “The Ford Commercial”… I mean, “Seven Mile Breakdown.” Surely you’ve heard it.

If only Allsion, Matt, Adam, Danny, and Kris took the stage for an hour, cracked inappropriate racist jokes while pretending to be drunk, and sang for about 5% of the show. I mean, the only song you get out of this 10 minute clip is a rousing rendition of "Happy Birthday".

My only prediction is that Matt will be smart enough to again wear a fedora or the like to cover up that bull's eye on his forehead.

All Top 5 have a decent chance to sound pretty good. I guess that also means they all have a decent chance of goin' home (if one were to drop the ball)?

I'm predicting that Adam sings "It Was A Very Good Year," because there are all sorts of weird things that you can do with that song (e.g. William Shatner's version.) Whoever trys to make "Mack the Knife" cool will go home. I can't believe that they didn't get Michael Buble to guest this week!

Oh my god--who else is psyched for Glee?!

P.S. - What is Paula wearing?

I was sold a bill of goods. Since when does Rat Pack simply equal standard ballads? Hey AI - if it's standards week, just call it that!

Everyone was rock solid. I'm really impressed with this final 5 - maybe the strongest final 5 this show has ever had. Not really a weak link among them. Although Matt had problems on and off throughout My Funny Valentine. I don't really think anyone deserves to go home tomorrow.

Quick question about Adam - did anyone hear a backing track on his last note? Or did he have a really delayed echo? There was a really noticeable hard g on "good" that kicked in there at the end after he sang his last note.

I wish I had his voice.

Jamie Foxx was great!

I obviously didn't post. I thought they all were great and the muaical selections terrific (but that's probably my age showing). My vote. however, would go to Danny.

I'd say it's Matt's week to depart, fedora or not.

Great song selections all around, though.

Danny started *really* strong, but I still wish he hadn't oversung at the end. I just don't want anyone (he or Mr. McShrillerson) yelling at me, and there's no need of it since they can both really sing. For that reason, I enjoyed Kris & Allison more overall, even though this genre was not in Alli's wheelhouse.

Wow, I have to say I think that was the best show of the season all around. I think all 5 were fantastic.

If I'm forced to pick, I was actually the most bored with Kris, believe it or not.

I loved hearing Allison sing a different type of song tonight, I loved Matt's performance (my lame ear didn't pick up on the pitchy stuff), Danny rocked, and Adam did his thing (which I happen to not like, but I recognize it as talent).

And, I am developing a crush on Jamie Foxx - is that weird???

Jamie Foxx has been in my top 3 for AGES! I totally call him.

I actually thought Matt was overrated last night. I've always had an issue with singers who put a run on every line instead of sustaining and controlling notes.

I love Allison.

And yes, Jon... I've had the Glee premiere on my calendar for weeks!

I've always liked Matt enough, but he's consistently inconsistent. Last night, he was pretty weak, with numerous painful pitch issues, besides the runs etc. I think Jamie's advice to lower the key actually hurt him, too, since his lower register was quite shaky. I'm happy he made it to the Top 5, but he doesn't deserve to be in the Final Four.
